The Importance of Children's Nutrition

Good nutrition is not something that comes naturally. It is something that needs to be learned. Most children aren't born picky, they develop it. As a good parent, you must ensure you provide your child with good nutrition. Dr. Michael Taymor and Dr. Lama Rimawi in Palo Alto, CA are both board-certified pediatricians and their practice uses evidence-based integrated medicine.

Once your children have reached the age where they will be eating table food, it is time to make sure that they have lots of choices. It is up to you to make sure that they are healthy choices. If you provide your child with a lot of sugar they will start to crave it. Try not to use a lot of prepackaged food which is often packed full of corn syrup and other sweeteners.

Breakfast Sets the Tone for the Day

Having a nourishing breakfast helps your children get their day off to the right start. Mornings can be hectic and having a plan helps to make sure that everyone gets the nutrition they need. Cereal and milk is a popular breakfast option and if the right cereal is chosen it can provide the fiber your kids require. Choose one with less than 12 grams of sugar and with at least 3gr of fiber. To add a little sweetness try adding some favorite fruits such as bananas, blueberries, strawberries, or peaches.

Oatmeal, peanut butter, and yogurt are all things that make a good breakfast along with eggs and a smoothie.

A Nutritious Lunch

It may be easier to allow your child to get lunch at school, but the reality is, if you pack their lunch you have some control over what they are eating. In many schools, peanut butter is not allowed due to peanut allergies but if it is allowed, it is an age-old favorite. It can be served as a sandwich, or as a dip for apples. Fresh veggies can be cut up and served with dip or fruit and yogurt. Whole grain crackers and sliced cheddar cheese or turkey or chicken rollup. Be creative with nutrition.

Dinner

Kids love things like pizza, macaroni and cheese, and chicken nuggets and even these can be made nutritious by watching preservatives, salt, and added sugar. Food should be something that is enjoyed and combined with healthy choices it can be just that. And a treat once in a while is something to enjoy but not an everyday thing.
